Code Response as applies to California?
In my training for Police, I have learned that:
Code 1 = Routine (No Lights/Siren.)
Code 2 = Urgent (Lights/Siren when Necessary)
Code 3 = Emergency (Lights and Siren)
I joined the local Fire Department as a Volunteer, and I am about to be an engine operator, flagged for Code 3 response.
In the Fire Department, CalFire states:
Code 1 = Routine (No Lights/Siren)
Code 2 = Urgent (Lights, but no siren)
Code 3 = Emergency (Lights with Siren)
So I'm confused - I thought it was state law that an emergency vehicle operating emergency lights must use the emergency siren. Is this true, or is that just my department's policy for the police?
It's confusing because CHP told me sirens must be used with emergency lights, but Cal Fire says you don't need it Code 2.
Confusion has settled in - Help!?
I want to make sure I'm fully informed before driving Code 2/3.
I would talk to my battalion chief but he'll give me the CalFire answer.
No, no state law in California mandates ALL emergency response vehicles to use sirens and lights simultaneously other than for Code 3's.
For instance, the fire department will use lights only and just the horn when approaching an intersection or to warn traffic.
Local police will often use lights only and use the siren in short spurts versus full siren, etc.
Ambulance services will use lights only and siren spurts, especially during certain hours in residential areas, etc.
CHP is different simply because they are on the freeways/highways with potentially more dangerous conditions because of the speed and volume of traffic and drivers have less ability to hear the sirens.
It depends on the circumstances, the traffic, and other conditions. It's up to the discretion of the driver.
