Java - Monitoring System Dilemma. How to -?
I'm currently working on a basic monitoring system using Java for my assignment. I'm using JFrame for the GUI. The structure of the monitoring system is as such.
In an infinite loop, the monitoring system will check the values for the monitored variables, updates the JLabels and JPanels colors in the GUI, then proceed to the knowledge-base methods which in the end will update a textArea(acting as a log) in the GUI. The loop delays for about 3 seconds and loops again.
So as I was executing the code, as expected the GUI freezes and all. So I read about the SwingWorker thread. But I have no idea how to implement it, how to update the GUI JLabels and JPanels as the monitoring progresses. Can anyone point me to the right direction and give me some guide? Any help is greatly appreciated.
SwingWorker is the "correct" way to do it. First, to explain why, note that if you have an infinite loop, the GUI freezes because the infinite loop is taking up all the processing time. It's okay to have an infinite loop as long as it's not in the main thread (since it also handles the GUI). So your idea to use a SwingWorker thread is a good one. Threads are kind of annoying to deal with, though. Threads are our only choice when the computation takes a long time. Anytime we need to perform something that will take a long time, it needs to be in a worker thread. However, if the operations you're doing are not computationally intensive, it's "okay" to put it in the main thread, since it's done so fast that the user won't be able to see the difference.
Thus, I will propose a hack that isn't the "correct" way to do it, but it essentially works. Use a "Timer" object. A timer object has an event that fires every X intervals, where you can define what X is (say, 3 seconds). When the event is triggered, the event handler runs, and you can do your monitoring updates in that handler. This will allow the GUI to still be responsive, since you have eliminated the infinite loop. Now, during the 3 second intervals, we are no longer infinite looping, and so we can handle other GUI events.
