Mower Repair
Broken electric push mower. Repair or replace?
I have a Taskforce 18" corded electric push mower. The model number escapes me at the moment..
Anyway, I was mowing today and the mower suddenly tripped a circuit breaker inside my house. At first I thought I blew the motor; I've had the mower for a couple of years. But then I realized that that a circuit had been tripped inside my house. So I reset the circuit, started the mower and it started perfectly like always but only for about 15 second before it tripped the breaker inside. I've tried multiple outlets inside my house and even a neighbor's house.
What could be causing my mower to do this?
I used the same cord to take care of the rest of my lawn with my edger but I'll try another cord real quick and make sure
Nope. It isn't the power cord. I tried another cord. The mower started up for about 10 seconds, sounded great and then tripped the breaker inside my house
If it was a short circuit the circuit breaker would trip immediately when you started the mower. You are drawing too much current for the circuit. The mower could just need a thorough cleaning or lubrication as if the motor is seeing too much mechanical resistance it will require more current to keep the blade spinning. Just sharpening the blade could make a difference but I doubt that is the problem. If you are up to it, remove the motor from the mower and clean it up and lubricate. It could be that you are ready for a replacement, but 2-3 years would be a very short life for a mower. One thing that could cause a short life would be too small of a power cord. If the cord is too small and quite long you will drop too much voltage so the motor will be trying to run on low voltage.
